Minutes of the Annual Meeting

May 16, 2018

President, Maelou Baxter, welcomed everyone to the Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Library.

Following a social hour at 5:00, in-coming president, Sue Doody, welcomed the group of 25 to the Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Library.  She announced that in order to reserve dates, next year’s meeting has already been scheduled.  It will be a noon luncheon meeting on Saturday, April 13, 2019.

The minutes of the 2017 Annual Meeting were distributed on the tables for reading, and Mary Schindler moved that they be approved with a 2nd by Carol Brown.  There was  unanimous approval.

Election of board members followed.  New board members, Mary Ellen Beckman, Margaret Empie, and Steve Palmquist gave brief introductions.  Returning board members are Maelou Baxter, Mary Bozik, Carol Brown, and David Walker.  Kay Thuesen moved and Cynthia Kenyon seconded the ballot be approved, and there was unanimous approval.

Sue noted that we now have 13 voting members on the Board, as well as Jay, our Library Director, and liaison members of our Board of Trustees.

Out-going president, Maelou Baxter, again thanked Sheryl McGovern for her service as Director of the Library, and also thanked outgoing board members, Judy Beckman, Joe Keller, and Diane Schupbach, who were unable to attend the meeting.  Maelou gave appreciation to our volunteers behind the scene, Bonnie Stetler who acts as a financial advisor and prepares our income taxes, Doris Mitchell who helps with membership, and Book Nook volunteers, Marilyn Nesvick, Alice Meyer, and Linda Meier.

Maelou then introducedour speaker, Library Director, Jay Robinson, who gave a fascinating resume of his early life as a farmer, his impressive education, and a review of his previous occupations, including that of a pastor and an organic farmer.  He came to Cedar Falls from his previous position in New Zealand.

He emphasized his belief that libraries and communities need to work together, and the library of the future will be one of books, digital access, and community space.  In Cedar Falls specifically we look forward to the completion of our Colab or Maker Space.

After his presentation and a question and answer session, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,Board Members Serving

Nancie Handorf, Secretary
