 *Ages listed are for intended audience. Children of other ages may attend with appropriate supervision.

** The birth-11 month storytime will be discontinued April 1st due to lack of attendance.

***Early Elementary storytime will begin at 3:00 p.m. beginning Feb. 1 because of the later school dismissal this year.


Spring Break Week, March 16-20

If you're looking for something to do, stop by the library, check out some books, and stay for one of these activities:

--Crafts: Two crafts will be available during our open hours all week.  Ask for one at the youth desk.

--Dr. Seuss Hat Hunt: Find the hats from Dr. Seuss books that are hidden in the department and earn a small token.

--Guess how many...jellybeans are in the jar at the youth desk.  The closest guess without going over will win a small prize.

--Family Movie, Thursday, March 19 at 6 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room.  We'll be showing Big Hero 6.  Popcorn, juice, and bottled water will be served.


Save the Date: Saturday, April 11, 2015 for our Children's Literature Festival for Families!

Join us for our first-ever Cedar Valley children's literature festival for families at the Cedar Falls Public Library and the Community Center (next door to the library).  It will be a day full of fun activities to celebrate our favorite children's books. Here are some of the things we have planned:

  • Visiting authors Jill Esbaum, Maribeth Boelts, and more TBAAlice with flamingo
  • Have your photo taken with a storybook character
  • Come dressed as your favorite storybook character and march in our costume parade
  • Book-related art activities
  • Dramatic performances by child-actors
  • Concerts by children's musician Dino O'Dell (featuring the CFPL puppeteers)
  • Yoga storytime
  • Much, much more!

Family Movie Night

Family Movie

Join us on the third Thursday of every month for a family movie.  Shows start at 6 p.m. in the youth department, and free popcorn and beverages will be served.

Our next movies:

--Feb. 19: The Boxtrolls, rated PG, 96 min.

--Mar. 19: Big Hero 6, rated PG, 102 min. This movie will be shown in the upstairs meeting room.

littleBits Workshops

With mentors from the Cedar Valley Makers organization, children ages 9-12 will learn to build projects with littleBits, which are magnetic pieces that, when joined, form simple circuits to make things happen. Each session is designed for both first-time attendees and for returning attendees--attend one or all of them. Registration is required, and 9 and 10-year-old attendees must be accompanied by an adult for the entire workshop.

Book Discussion Groups

Book Club Books Only

Youth Department staff lead two monthly book discussion groups, one for grades 3/4 and another for grades 5/6, during the school year (October-May).  Interested in joining? Sign up for the first month's book clubs begins in mid-September.

1st-Friday Puppet Shows!

Blue Luppet

Please join us on the first Friday of each month from October through April at 4 p.m. in the Youth Department for puppet shows.

2014-15 Puppet Show Dates Are:

             October 3            November 7          December 5

                January 2          February 6           March 6           

                                           April 3

 CFPL puppet shows provide 100% of your recommended monthly puppet intake. 



Meeting space is available in the Youth Department. Call 859-3282 to reserve a time.
