"Toilet Paper in the 1880s: Getting the Details Right"

Together, David Hoing & Roger Hileman are the authors of two historical fiction novels, A Killing Snow and Hammon Falls, as well as a collection of short stories. Their talk will cover how they research their historical settings to get the details right, from accurate portrayals of events to the everyday details (yes, like toilet paper!) that transport readers to the past. David and Roger will leave time for questions and will have books for sale following.

Roger lives in Iowa City with his wife Lu. They have three grown daughters. He works at ACT, where he's the Program Coordinator in Learning Sciences, Analytics, & Navigation research. He's also a professional jazz musician, and plays trombone in a couple of big bands. He's been heavily involved in local theater, both as performer and musical director/conductor.

David lives in Waterloo with his wife Joni. His stepson and stepdaughter have both flown the coop to California. David is a Library Associate at the UNI Library, where he works in Special Collections and University Archives. His short fiction has twice been nominated for Pushcart Prizes, and several stories have been represented in best-of-the-year anthologies. David is also a musician, a composer, but not, unless under extreme duress, a performer.

Their latest book, In the Blood, will be released this spring, but probably not, alas, in time for their presentation. Other titles will be for sale.
