Bridge to Reading
Iowa's first statewide book award for preschool picture books, the Bridge to Reading award, will be introduced in public libraries beginning in February. The purpose of the award is "to promote early literacy through quality picture books nominated by a committee of librarians, teachers, preschool and early literacy leaders." Ten books are nominated for their quality and good read-aloud characteristics, and the votes will come entirely from preschool through kindergarten-aged children.
Families are invited to attend our Bridge to Reading kickoff events on Thursday, February 6th at 6:30 p.m. (part 1) and Thursday, March 6th at 6:30 p.m. (part 2). At the events we will read the nominated books, sing songs, have a healthy snack, and children will be given a craft to take home to make. The nominated books will also be read during storytimes throughout February and will be read to children in daycares and preschools through our Traveling Tales program. Ballots and copies of the nominees will be available in the youth department. For more information, visit the Bridge to Reading web site.
