Join UNI Associate Professor of History Tom Connors on a northern excursion to "Native, Russian, and American Heritage in Alaskan Cemeteries".  This year’s cemetery talk will look at how Alaska’s burial grounds reflect its mix of Alaska Native, Russian, and American inhabitants.   Drawing on images from around the road system and Southeast, the presentation will show examples of Athabaskan and Tlingit traditional burials and remnants of Russian traditions in Sitka and Native villages.

American customs may be found in pioneer cemeteries in towns (like Talkeetna and Copper Center) and military cemeteries at Sitka and Ft. Richardson.  Around Anchorage and Fairbanks today, frontier traditions clash with the regulations of modern American memorial parks.  Ultimately the landscapes and monuments reveal much about Alaskans themselves and what it means to live and die in the Last Frontier
