Program for Women's history month: Women and Radical Politics

March 11 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Emily Machen, a professor of history at UNI will present: Women and Radical Politics

Description: Women have engaged in some of the most violent and radical political movements of modern times. They encouraged decapitations during the French Revolution, they engaged in terrorist acts to demand suffrage, they both supported and opposed communist and fascist movements. Stereotypes about "women's nature" shadowed all of their political engagement. Sometimes stereotypes held women back from achieving greater equality, sometimes stereotypes protected women from prosecution, and sometimes women used stereotypes to advance their agendas. This talk will explore moments in women's radical political engagement and how stereotypes about women continue to shape discussions about women's roles in modern society.

Audience: adults and high school students
