Library Atrium Project

The Cedar Falls Public Library seeks to commission a site specific, one-of-a-kind, artwork designed by an individual artist or a team of artists/designers to serve as an inspirational focal point for the library’s multi-story atrium.

Up to $50,000 has been budgeted for artist fees, design, fabrication, shipping/transportation, engineering review & approval, travel to and from Cedar Falls, and installation costs. The artwork is to be an indoor public work and is funded by the Cedar Falls Public Library. The artwork must be completed and permanently and securely installed by December 31, 2014.

The proposed artwork can be created in any medium that will permanently withstand the environment and the natural and artificial light in the library’s atrium. Multiple object and environmental work is acceptable. Style may vary from literal to abstract. The artwork may or may not be functional. The size or scale of the artwork is not limited, but should complement the space.

Site

The atrium of the Cedar Falls Public Library, 524 Main Street, Cedar Falls, Iowa. The atrium is approximately 20’ in height, and irregularly shaped. However, it is approximately 30’ wide, and 24’ deep. Two walls consist of glass panels, 2 walls are primarily solid, but with some doors and windows into the library.

Selection Process

The selection and administration of this commission will be made by the Cedar Falls Public Library Board of Trustees, with the assistance of the Library’s Art Committee and advisory representatives from the Cedar Falls Public Art Committee. The Board and Committee are made up of community and business members and professional artists. After an initial review of preliminary proposals the library’s art committee will select up to three semi-finalists. Semi-finalists will receive a $500.00 stipend to develop their proposal for formal presentation. Formal presentations will include drawings and/or scale models to accurately present the proposed materials, scale, and structure of the intended art work. Maquettes should be substantial enough to be placed on public view. After the formal presentations, the Library’s Board of Trustees will select the project. The Board reserves the right to reject or suggest modifications to any or all parts of proposals. Upon selection, a contract will be negotiated between the artist and the Cedar Falls Public Library Board of Trustees.
