Visiting Author: Frederick Blanch  Tuesday, June 4th, 7:00 P.M. Meeting Room Minnesota author Frederick Blanch will read from his latest book, Last Words: Frederick's Bionary, a "witty, charming, sad, and hilarious" account of the author's trials and travails. The book has been nominated for the Minnesota Book Awards and includes accounts of Blanch's upbringing during the Great Depression years in a small Minnesota farming community. Frederick Blanch will sign and sell books after the presentation. |
Musician Danny Santos  June 11, 2013, 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Singer/songwriter Danny Santos melds the inspiration of his Chicano heritage, a musical legacy ranging from Hank Williams to the Beatles, and a Texas-sized determination to create a unique mix of country/folk music tinged with bluegrass and the blues. Born in South Texas, Danny began playing the guitar at age thirteen and singing and songwriting followed soon after. Danny has performed locally at the KUNI studio and at Cup of Joe. He will be accompanied by a sideman, who will conduct a guitar flatpicking and mandolin technique workshop at 3:00 p.m. The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. |
| E-readers Now Available for Checkout We have 18 Nooks available for checkout. Stop by our display on the first floor to choose your e-reader by picking up an empty box. We have various subjects and titles. Titles are listed on the boxes on the display. Bring the empty box to the circulation desk to check out your e-reader. Along with the e-reader will be a charger, carrying case and quick start instruction guide. E-readers may be checked out for three weeks with a three week renewal. E-readers are limited to 3 per patron and may be placed on hold. When returning the e-reader please bring it inside the library and give it to a staff member. Do not put the e-reader in a drop box. If you have checked out one of our Nooks, please take our brief survey to help us improve this service. If you have questions, call 319-268-5543. We Need Volunteers for a Special Project  The library is in the first phase of a major upgrade project. We are looking for volunteers to help install new RFID tags in library materials. Tasks include removing materials from the shelves, attaching the new tags, scanning the items, and replacing them on the shelves. The library uses the Dewey Decimal system so volunteers will need good reading, writing, and alphabetizing skills and the ability to follow directions, pay attention to details, multi-task, and work quickly. We belong to NEIBORS, a consortium of over 130 Eastern Iowa Libraries. We also have an Overdrive collection with the Waterloo Public Library. Cedar Falls or rural Black Hawk County residents may check out books in NEIBORS using their Cedar Falls library card. Anyone with a Cedar Falls or Waterloo library card may check out books in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo service. If you are experiencing problems with the NEIBORS or the Cedar Falls/Waterloo OverDrive Web sites try a different browser. Internet explorer 8 is not compatible with these Web sites. An OverDrive Media Console App is now available for the NOOK HD, NOOK HD+, NOOK Tablet™ and NOOK Color. It can be found in the NOOK Apps storefront and downloaded for free. Freegal - Free Music Downloads!  The Library offers a free downloadable music service called Freegal. With access to the Sony Music Entertainment catalog, it offers hundreds of thousands of songs, over 100 genres of music, and more than 50 record labels. All you need is your library card number! The downloads are all in the MP3 format with no DRM (Digital Rights Management) limits. This service will work with any MP3 player, including iPod, and can be loaded into iTunes. It works on both PCs and Macs. Check it Out! |
Teen A-Z Spring Reading Challenge  March 20 - June 21 Teens-are you up for this challenge? From Mar 20 – Jun 21, you will need to read 26 books BUT the first word of the title or the author’s name (first or last) should correspond to a letter of the alphabet. No need to read in alphabetical order but be sure to hit up all 26 in order to be eligible for a chance to win a Nook Tablet.
